Seasonal Water Supply Information

Lakehaven Utility District will not be changing the source of supply from groundwater to water purchased from Tacoma during the upcoming winter months for certain customers located within the District's "Transitional" Zone (click to see map).

TACOMA CHLORINATION ZONE

Since 1995, the District has purchased wholesale water from the city of Tacoma through water connections known as interties and has used this water to blend with District wells as a source of supply for an isolated pressure zone in the southwestern area of the District's distribution system. The purpose behind the purchase of water from Tacoma has been to reduce the total annual withdrawal from local groundwater supplies, thereby allowing our aquifers to recover during the winter months and reserve more water for peak summer usage.

"TRANSITIONAL" ZONE

From 1995 to 1998, during the period from October I through May 1, the Tacoma Chlorination Zone has been "expanded" to include a portion of the District's western and southeastern water service areas. During these years, customers within this "Transitional" Zone received water that fluctuated between blended Tacoma water in the summer and Lakehaven groundwater in the winter. Each September and April the District notified customers within this area that the change in their source of water was to occur. However, in the fall of 1999 this change will not occur and until further notice, customers who are located within this "Transitional" Zone will continue to receive groundwater from local District wells. The primary reason this "expansion" will not occur is because the District is preparing a new water treatment program that will be implemented in the next year. "Expansion" of the Tacoma Chlorination Zone is not in the treatment plan at this time.

The "Tacoma Chlorination Zone" in the southwestern area of the District's distribution system will continue to receive wholesale water purchased from Tacoma (which is both chlorinated and fluoridated). However, water service areas shown on the map as receiving groundwater from District wells will be treated in the near future with chlorine but will not be fluoridated.
